Plant Process Evaluation

As I have traveled around the country to different operations, I have witnessed a plethora of different practices and procedures. Some were very beneficial and others seemed to be more like busy work. I have discovered that the morale of your operators can be greatly enhanced when they have a clear understanding of the “why” and when they feel that what they are doing is making a difference.

Below are a few questions that may help you evaluate some of your current processes and possibly help efficiency within your operation.

6 Questions To Ask

1. Is it beneficial to the organization?

I know this sounds like a silly question but how many times have you asked yourself this when you have had to do something that just didn’t seem worthwhile? Operators ask this question often. Whether they voice it out loud or not.

2. Does it increase communication?

Communication is one of the most important tools you have as a leader. Keeping the lines clear and concise can mean a good day or a bad one. Having a good system of communication is critical for the success of your operation.

3. Does it enhance safety?

Does it enhance safety? Employees can thrive in a safe environment. This helps them to be more at ease and focus on their tasks at hand. Safety hinges on good communication.

4. Does it help mitigate risk?

Do you have measures in place that help to prevent bad things from happening? If bad things happen do you have a good form of documentation to make sure that it doesn’t happen again?

5. Is it measurable?

Collecting data is extremely important but do you have a way to measure what you have collected? Do you have a tool to easily review the data and display it in such a way that the team can discuss what they see and make informed decisions to improve plant operations?

6. Is it manageable?

Data is great but it can be burdensome if you can’t properly manage it. Having an easy to use system to collect and manage data is like having a well thought out gameplan for each day. Data can then be utilized to make more informed decisions creating a safer more efficient work environment.
