Home Quarantine or Isolation of Key Resources – Now What?

It seems almost impossible, but the new threat we’re all dealing with has arisen in just a short few months.  Now, in an abundance of caution, many are advising or requiring their employees to stay home in certain circumstances.  But, significant operations must continue.  Fortunately, a modern, cloud based operational logging solution can provide you an important part of the solution to your business continuity plan.

So, what do you do when certain key resources can’t be physically present in your operation? It might be an expert on certain systems. It might be someone who has the most experience in your operating environment.  Today, it might be a number of these people.

No matter what, you’ll probably need a skeleton crew at the plant or operating facility. Hopefully, it won’t matter too much, which team members are present, if you have the right practices in place.

Historically, and even today, too many rely on paper records for operating notes and observations.  Slightly more advanced are those that use spreadsheets for recording observations, like inspections or walkdowns.  However, those who have invested in a modern logbook, are in a great position for this. Here’s why.

Modern logbooks include robust features for discreetly capturing observation data with mobile devices. This includes pictures and commentary to accompany observations.  So, not only is the data captured more quickly and easily, it’s stored permanently in the cloud.  Because of this, it doesn’t matter where your experts are located.  You can have a water chemistry expert at home, and that person can easily keep tabs on any necessary changes in chemical use or any need to adjust system mixes.  And, the modern logbooks can use rules to push notifications to these resources, when they need to get involved.

Further, modern logbooks have tools that make it intuitive for someone to do a walkdown or inspection they’ve never done before by stepping them through the process. This means that the cross training burden is minimized.

Not only does this increase visibility and minimize the need for local presence, it improves resource flexibility, operational awareness and one’s ability to automatically “separate the wheat from the chaff” with regard to what needs attention quickly.

Consider how your business continuity plan might be enhanced by embracing a modern logbook for your operation. Some sources are predicting relief in the near future. But we all continue to work in the present.

Stay safe out there, and keep the operations running!
